Large-scale exercise to put emergency services to the test in Stockton [Archived]

Residents across Stockton are being told not to be alarmed by scenes of a major incident on Tuesday 14th June, as the Local Resilience Forum gears up for one of the largest outdoor emergency exercises to take place in the town.

Exercise Trafalgar sees agencies come together to test response plans against an unknown emergency scenario at a ‘secret location’ within Stockton Town Centre. Other than knowing a live exercise will take place, senior officers and executives are being kept in the dark about its nature to ensure that the response is as real as possible.

Agencies such as Cleveland Police, Stockton Borough Council, North East Ambulance Service, Cleveland Fire Brigade, Stockton Riverside College and Thirteen Housing Group have all been involved in the months of planning.

Stockton Riverside College and SRC Bede Sixth Form students will form an integral part of the exercise. Public Services students will be role play acting as casualties in the incident and Production Arts students will work with Amputees in Action supporting the set-up of the scene. Construction students are building realistic sets to keep agencies guessing during the live play of the exercise while TV and film students will capture footage on the day.

Members of the public can see the exact location on the day of the exercise through social media using #2016LRF, on police and partner Facebook pages, or via local media.

Chair of Cleveland Local Resilience Forum, Phil Lancaster, said: “This exercise will stringently test the skills of our emergency services and the plans we have in place to deal with major incidents. We have highly professional and competent teams working in Cleveland keeping the area safe.

“This exercise gives us the opportunity to test our plans against realistic scenarios so that we can be confident that when we have to deal with major emergencies, responders are prepared.

“Stockton Town Centre will be a hive of activity during the exercise but the exact location must be kept a secret to make the scenario as real as possible. The exercise has been months in the planning and I would like to thank all the partners involved for their fantastic work.”
