King Ting's story

After separating from her husband, King Ting was looking for a home that would provide security and a place to make new friends.

17 years on, King Ting continues to make memories at Tai Hua Court and says that the sense of community is her favourite thing about living at the scheme.

She said: “Since moving to Tai Hua Court, I’m much happier. Everyone looks out for each other and if you need help, you just have to ask.”

Residents come together for parties, including Chinese New Year celebrations, and the scheme is a short walk away from a Chinese community centre which runs weekly activities such as dancing and tai chi. There is also a space for gardening in the communal area.

“My neighbours are Chinese and we enjoy spending time together, sharing good food with good friends.

“Staff really help with communication and translating important documents, like letters from the GP. Every morning residents get a call in Chinese to check in, which is reassuring.

“In my flat, there’s lots of space and it’s comfortable. I’m happy here and I can’t imagine my life any other way.”

About Tai Hua Court

Managed by Thirteen, Tai Hua Court is a sheltered housing scheme for Chinese elders who might need support to live independently.

Situated on North Ormesby Road in Middlesbrough, it's a thriving community with activities to reduce isolation and encourage independent living.

A Chinese speaking scheme co-ordinator is on hand to respond to queries, support with translation and report repairs.

The scheme is right next door to Thirteen's new sheltered accommodation for older customers, which includes 18 supported housing apartments at the former Rivers House office.
