Ken's story

Ken was living with his dad before moving to the scheme and was keen to have a space that he could make his own.

Now living in his own home, Ken is learning new skills every day and is near staff on site who can offer help when he needs it.

Ken said: “I love living here, it makes me really happy. There’s peace and quiet, but I know there is lots of people around me so I don’t feel lonely.

“Staff support me with cooking and learning new skills. There’s a button I can press if I need help or have an accident, where the staff will come up and see me. Everyone is really good with me.”

An avid pool player, Ken enjoys spending time in the communal area with his new friends at Acorn House.

“I enjoy spending time with people here, going out together and playing pool. I’m so happy I’ve got my own flat now.

“Supported housing means so much to me as it’s given me independence. It makes me look forward to the future and inviting my family over for Christmas.”

About Acorn House

Acorn House is an independent living scheme in Thornaby for people with additional support needs.

Situated a short walk away from Thornaby centre, the scheme is made up of 15 fully accessible one bedroom apartments and 13 two bedroom bungalows.

The scheme offers a high-quality environment and a team on site to provide a helping hand when it’s needed.
