Major £6million investment underway to improve Middlesbrough town centre homes [Archived]
A major £6million investment project is underway to improve and enhance homes in Middlesbrough town centre.
26 Jun 2025
We've appointed North-East based regeneration specialist RE:GEN to carry out the work at Central Mews in Middlesbrough town centre, as part of its Capital Delivery Framework.
Central Mews, which has 148 flats, and was built in 1981 is set to benefit from a wide range of essential improvements designed to enhance safety, security and the living environment for residents.
The project which started this month, includes window replacements to all flats – not only improving the appearance of the homes, but also boosting their energy efficiency.
In addition, the team will also carry out roof repairs, landscaping and substantial security upgrades, such as the installation of new security doors, metal security fencing with access control, improvements to car parking areas and a modern CCTV system.
There are also plans for significant upgrades to the on-site community centre, with improvements including a new kitchen, full redecoration, rewiring and the installation of a new alarm system to create a safer, more comfortable and modern shared space for residents to enjoy.
To mark this important milestone, Middlesbrough Mayor Chris Cooke was welcomed to the site to meet residents and members of the project team to hear about the planned improvements and see the progress.
Thirteen’s investment area manager Rubie Dixon-Lee said: “This investment goes beyond just physical improvements; it’s about helping to create a safer and more comfortable environment for our customers. The regeneration of Central Mews will make a real difference to people’s lives and help to support a thriving town centre community.”
Resident and involved customer Martin Hearn said: “It’s been great to be involved in the planning of this work and to feel like my suggestions have really been listened to. These improvements are so important to me and everyone who lives here and I can’t wait to see how much of a difference it will make to the area.”
Middlesbrough Mayor Chris Cooke said: “These improvements will help to make people who live in Central Mews feel safer and happier in their homes.
“The upgrades to the flats will be welcomed by the residents here and I’m very pleased Thirteen is investing in town centre living in this way.”
Managing director Jonathan Horner at RE:GEN North East added: “We’re proud to be partnering once again with the team at Thirteen to deliver more meaningful regeneration projects in the heart of Middlesbrough. Our purpose is to enhance lives through safe, sustainable social housing regeneration and Central Mews is a great example of what collaborative investment can achieve, supporting both the community and a positive future for the town centre. It is great to see and hear this project welcomed from customers and the wider community.”
The project, which is expected to be completed in August 2026 is part of Thirteen’s wider £58million investment plans, which are improving thousands of homes in the North East and Yorkshire this year.
