Since its launch in 2022, the innovative scheme has helped more than 370 families to furnish their homes – supporting people who've experienced homelessness, financial hardship or are starting over, after fleeing difficult circumstances.

Thanks to the dedication of the small upcycling team, 88% of customers supported have remained in their homes that they were able to set up with support from the team.

To build on the success of the project they opened a dedicated upcycling shop, where restored furniture is sold at affordable prices.

The shop’s proceeds are reinvested into the scheme to buy household essentials and furniture packs, for customers most in need.

Recycling centre manager Helen Beaman said: “It’s amazing to see how far the upcycling scheme has come in just three years.

“What started as a small idea to reuse donated furniture has grown into a lifeline for hundreds of customers.

“With the addition of the upcycling shop, we can help even more people, while continuing to cut waste.”

It’s had a huge impact on the environment. Over the past three years, the team has prevented more than 100 tonnes of furniture from going to landfill - contributing to the organisation’s ambition to reduce waste by 95% and reach net zero carbon by 2035 for its direct business emissions.

Helen continued: “Every item that’s restored tells a story. Furniture can completely change how someone feels about their home. But, it’s not just about furniture, we’re helping to give our customers stability and hope as they begin a fresh start in their new home, without the worry of further financial burden.”
