If you rent your home from us, you might be able to buy it through the Right to Acquire or Right to Buy schemes.
These options give you the chance to own your home at a discount – depending on your tenancy history and the type of property you live in.
What is Right to Acquire?
Right to Acquire is a government scheme that lets some housing association tenants buy their home at a discount.
If you’ve been a public sector tenant for at least three years and your home was built or funded by a public body after 31 March 1997, you could qualify.
The discount is usually £9,000, making home ownership more affordable.

Do you have the Right to Acquire?
You may qualify for Right to Acquire if:
- You were a tenant of Tees Valley Housing, Tristar Homes, Erimus Housing or Housing Hartlepool after they moved away from council ownership
- You’ve been a housing association tenant for at least 3 years
- You became a tenant of Thirteen after 1 July 2017
How to apply to acquire your home
Acquiring your home is a big decision and a commitment that you shouldn’t take lightly. Even though it can have advantages, you should think carefully about the responsibilities, costs and financial commitments of home ownership.
You should always get independent financial and legal advice before buying your home.
Step: 1
Fill in the Right to Acquire application form.
Find the form on the government website.
Step: 2
Send the Right to Acquire application form to us, your landlord.
Step: 3
We will respond to you with a yes or no decision within 4 weeks of getting your application. (8 weeks if we have been your landlord for less than 3 years).
If the decision is a no, we'll explain why. You can't appeal our decision.
Step: 4
If we agree to sell, we'll send you an offer within 8 weeks of saying yes if you're buying a freehold property, or 12 weeks if you're buying a leasehold property.
