Top tips for everyday balcony safety
- Never lean over, sit, or climb on the balcony wall or railings
- Don’t try to pass or throw items to someone on another balcony
- Never stand on balcony furniture - it’s easy to lose balance or slip
- If you have young children, please take extra care. Always supervise them, and never leave them alone on the balcony.

Fires can start anywhere at home – even outdoors. Because balconies are open to the air, a fire can spread much faster with the help of wind and unlimited oxygen.

Plants are absolutely fine, and can help you enjoy your space.
A few pieces of patio furniture
A small amount of patio furniture is ok to keep on your balcony.
Keep your balcony clear
Try to keep your balcony as clear as possible to help prevent fires from starting or spreading.
Smoking safely on your balcony
Always fully extinguish cigarettes.
Use an ashtray, or a bucket of water or sand to dispose of them safely
Items that must not be stored on your balcony
White goods and electrical appliances
Fridges, freezers, tumble dryers, and similar appliances must not be stored on balconies.
They aren’t designed for outdoor use and could cause a fire.
Combustible or bulky items
Don’t store flammable materials or large items such as furniture, artificial grass, timber, decorating materials, children’s plastic toys, rubbish or clutter.
Outdoor heaters and flame pits
You must not use gas or electric patio heaters or flame pits on your balcony.
Barbecues
Do not use BBQs of any kind - falling embers can start fires on your balcony or neighbouring balconies.
