Moving into extra care during the pandemic

Jim and his wife found themselves needing to move into supported housing at the start of the pandemic. Despite all the challenges, our team at Meadowfield House went above and beyond to help them move in safely.

Meadowfield House is a specialist extra care scheme in Thornaby for over 55s with varying care and support needs.

Jim* moved into Meadowfield House with his wife in May 2020 during the early days of the pandemic.

Before moving in, Jim and his wife had been living in a care home due to his wife’s care needs. His wife's placement was funded but Jim needed to pay the care home fees for himself so that he could continue to live with her.

Due to the government coronavirus guidance, Meadowfield House was closed to visitors and new admissions, but as the couple were in need of urgent help, staff at the scheme did all they could to help them move in as safely as possible.

They worked closely with the couple, their family and the care team to agree what needed to be done and arrange the move in a way that ensured everyone’s safety.

Everything went to plan on the day of the move. Jim and his wife were extremely happy and grateful that they had been allowed to move during such extreme circumstances.

Sadly, Jim’s wife passed away after a short period of time, but to this date, Jim is so thankful that they moved in. Although short, he says his wife loved every minute of her time with him and he is eternally grateful for the time they had together.
