Staff at Thirteen raised a fantastic £2,000 for the Teesside branch of the Samaritans during world mental health day, earlier this month.

World mental health day was an excellent opportunity to encourage staff to open up to mental health, to talk and to listen and to do this we arranged various events and activities across the business.

We held a dress down and 'wear it green' day and organised some great activities such as wellbeing walks, hand reflexology, Indian head massage, chair yoga, laughter yoga, arts and crafts, a bake sale and writing for wellbeing.

Heather Ashton, Thirteen's executive director of resources, said: “As an organisation that's committed to maintaining a happy and healthy workforce, I'm really pleased that so many people got involved in world mental health day. "It's so important that we talk about mental health and face it head-on and I'm proud to be showing our commitment to mental health.

“I’m also really thrilled to be handing over a cheque to the Samaritans who do such a fantastic job. Every six seconds somebody contacts Samaritans for help and hopefully our fundraising will go some way to helping them continue to recruit, train and support volunteers and keep this free, life-saving service going 24 hours a day.”

Neil Craig, Director of Teesside Samaritans, added:  "I would like to say a big thankyou from everyone at Teesside Samaritans for this very generous donation.  We are a self sufficient local branch and we rely on kind donations from the local community and organisations like Thirteen, so when we receive one as large as this, it gives a real boost to our volunteers and also allows them to continue supporting people in distress or dispair in our community."
