The money will be used towards the running costs of the project, which provides activities for children living in Easterside, Middlesbrough. Starz Community Kids Club, which is managed by Elaine Curry, who is part of the Parish Church Council of St Cuthbert’s Church, Marton, holds a weekly Tuesday night children’s club for youngsters aged between five and 16. It also organises half-term community days and a ‘summer feast of fun’ school holiday club to allow children and families to meet and have fun in a safe and caring environment.
Children at the Tuesday night club have a meal, including fresh fruit, before taking part in sporting activities, arts and crafts, song and dance and quiet reflection time.
Around 45 children take part in the Tuesday clubs and the grant will help to pay for the costs of materials, resources and healthy food and snacks. It will also enable a fuller programme of school holiday clubs and six family community days, where families can come together for a meal and shared activities.
Thirteen’s Community Fund grants up to £2,000 to support activities that make its neighbourhoods places where people want to live. In 2018 it supported more than 80 projects including a homeless café, trips out for vulnerable and elderly people, alcohol awareness week, holiday hunger scheme and employability events.
Jane Hobbs, senior compliance business partner at Thirteen, said:
“I’m absolutely delighted that we have been able to make this grant to allow the Starz Community Kids Club to provide even more activities for children in Easterside. The group has a fantastic reputation in the area, and parents trust its leadership with their children, which is so important.
“At Thirteen we really recognise and value the work of volunteers who make such a difference to their local communities.
“We want to support and work with groups, like Starz Community Kids Club, which make a positive contribution to the well-being and sustainability of our neighbourhoods, by offering grants of up to £2,000.
“We’re happy to take applications from groups and organisations working within areas where Thirteen has homes. This includes community groups, local and national charities, residents’ associations, voluntary organisations, public sector bodies, local authorities, private sector companies and Thirteen service teams.”
Elaine Curry, team leader at Starz Community Kids Club, said:
“We’re so grateful for this grant from Thirteen. It will make a huge difference to our children and families and mean we can provide more activities and ensure that the children have healthy meals and snacks when they attend.
“The support of organisations such as Thirteen is really important to communities like Easterside where community groups and organisations play a vital role in providing much-needed activities for local children and their families.”
