As part of Thirteen’s work to make improvements to the Dodford estate in Hemlington, residents said that they wanted to see more things for children to do in the area. To help meet people’s needs, Thirteen worked in partnership with youth-work project Hemlington Linx to start a youth club for 10 to 13 year olds.

The first session was held on 9 July and saw 30 young people attending, which Josh Harrison from Hemlington Linx said was a fantastic turn-out for the first session.

He continued: “The first session was a great success and went fantastically well!

“The local police community support officers also came along and all of the group engaged really well and everybody had fun. Hopefully it’s just the start of some great activities for young people on the Dodford estate and I’d invite anyone aged 10 to 13 to come along and join in.”

Claire Gittins, one of Thirteen’s neighbourhood co-ordinators in Hemlington, said: “We’ve been doing lots of work to encourage residents and Thirteen’s customers to get involved in making real improvements in the area. Activities for young people were identified as being an important aspect to improving the estate so we got together with Linx to start a new group. This is just one example of a whole range of things we’re looking to develop in the area, and we’re continuing to work hard to make a positive impact for people living in the area.”

Running every Tuesday from 6pm to 8pm at the Dodford Community Centre, sessions costs 50p and are a great way for children to socialise, have fun and make new friends. The local policing team will also be supervising and monitoring the sessions as they finish.
