The name 'Union Village' signifies the union of the old development and the new, which is being delivered by Thirteen and built by Esh Construction on land between Diamond Road and Union Street.

The development will see the delivery and building of new, affordable and much-needed homes, which form ambitious plans to regenerate part of central Middlesbrough by bringing derelict land back to life.

The 145 new high-quality homes will all be for affordable rent and include two to four-bedroom homes with a mix of houses, apartments, and bungalows.

Thirteen is investing over £30m into the housing scheme, as well as funding coming from Homes England and the Government's Brownfield Housing Fund.

Thirteen's director of development, Joy Whinnerah, said: "It's fantastic to see this long-awaited development taking shape. We're thrilled to be working with Esh Construction, Middlesbrough Council, the Tees Valley Combined Authority, Homes England, and other partners to deliver these fantastic new homes in the heart of the town, contributing to the revival of this historic neighbourhood."

Esh’s pre-construction director, Chris Hale, said: “This is a significant regeneration scheme for the Gresham area and we are proud to be playing our part as a local contractor. Giving back to the local community is at the core of Esh’s values and throughout the project we will deliver a raft of initiatives to leave a lasting legacy in the area.”

Middlesbrough Mayor Andy Preston added: “Huge praise to Thirteen. When everyone else was giving up on the centre of Middlesbrough they shared my confidence and ambition and were willing to put their reputation and money on it. As a result Middlesbrough is gaining very high quality and affordable new homes. For central Middlesbrough the only way is up.”
